What I Wish I Knew Before Getting Undereye Filler
For as long as I can remember, my undereyes have been a huge insecurity of mine. It didn’t matter how much sleep I got, how much concealer I wore, or how many iron pills I took, I always looked tired. I finally decided to get undereye filler and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I look well-rested, smoother, and my concealer applies flawlessly. To answer everything you need to know before you book your under-eye filler appointment, I reached out to Manhattan Beach, CA board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nina Desai (who did my filler), and Los Angeles facial cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Alexander Rivkin.
What are Under-Eye Fillers?
“Under eye fillers are injections of smooth, reversible hyaluronic acid fillers that fill the hollows under the eyes that develop with age (or due to genetics). These hollows make us look tired because they cause a shadow to develop under the eyes,” says Dr. Rivkin.
There are different brands and types of hyaluronic acid fillers that can be used under the eyes, which is why it’s important to go to a qualified injector who will choose the right filler for you.
Are You a Good Candidate for Under-Eye Filler?
Not everyone is a good candidate for undereye filler. “A good candidate for undereye filler is someone who displays a hollow area under the eye or a sunken look to the orbital area,” says Dr. Desai.
For example, if you have a lot of excess or loose skin, you may not be the best candidate for under-eye filler and should see a board-certified dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon for a consultation and to talk about your other options.
Is it Painful? Is it Safe?
“The procedure doesn’t really hurt and is very safe if performed by a qualified and experienced injector,” says Dr. Rivkin. Before my injection, Dr. Desai applied a topical numbing cream for about 30 minutes and I felt no pain, just a little discomfort. The most uncomfortable part is knowing there’s a needle being inserted into your skin.
How Long Will It Last?
Depending on the type of filler used, Dr. Desai says the results can last six to 12 months before you need a touch up.
Will I See Results Right Away?
You will see the results right away, but you may experience some swelling and bruising for a dew days following the procedure. Most injectors will have their patients come back in after a couple of weeks to make sure the desired results are achieved.
How Much Does It Cost?
The cost of the treatment depends on few factors such as the type and amount of filler used as well as the experience and location of your injector. On average, the cost range from $750 to $2,500. Just remember that it’s important to see an experienced, qualified injector, so this is definitely not the time to go discount hunting.
Aftercare
Dr. Desai advises her patients to avoid alcohol and certain medications that can increase your chances of bruising like aspirin or ibuprofen. “It’s important not to rub or massage the area to avoid disrupting the filler. You can return to your pre filler skincare routine after the treatment, however be very gentle under the eyes to avoid causing more inflammation.”
