Are High-Frequency Wands Worth It to treat acne? A Dermatologist Explains
I’m a sucker for skincare tools and devices. While some devices can be game-changers for your skin, others are just fun to use, but it’s important to know what’s worth the investment. Recently, I started to use high-frequency wands for my acne and have been loving the results. I spoke to board-certified dermatologist and founder of Dermy Doc Box, Dr. Fatima Fahs to answer some FAQs about high-frequency wands before you hit that purchase button.
What is a High-Frequency Treatment?
“High-frequency treatments work to deliver focused thermal energy to the skin, heat up the sebaceous glands, and destroy acne-causing bacteria. They also oxygenate the skin to increase circulation and reduce inflammation and redness,” says Dr. Fahs.
What are the Benefits of High-Frequency for Acne?
I was interested in high-frequency wands to support my skincare routine for acne. According to Dr. Fahs, one way to use high-frequency wands is as a spot treatment to help heal or improve the appearance of red, inflamed acne. “This is ideal for someone who gets the occasional pimple and wants to make it go away quicker.”
High-frequency wands are a great spot treatment the night before a big event, when I use my The Things We Do High Frequency Wand ($98) on an inflamed or emerging pimple, I’ve noticed it will decrease in size and redness overnight. That said, high-frequency wands can’t be your one and only line of defense against acne.
“The tool will help to shorten the lifespan of your pimple, but it may not prevent them altogether, which is why it’s important to use this in conjunction with treatment provided by your dermatologist and a solid skincare routine,” says Dr. Fahs.
Keep in mind, while there’s anecdotal evidence to support these claims, there hasn’t been solid studies to back these claims.
How To Use High-Frequency Wand
You can use your high-frequency wands anywhere on your body, and even on your scalp. Dr. Fahs suggests using an at-home high-frequency wand no more than once a day.
