3 Tips to Keep Your Hair Healthy In Between Salon Visits

3 Tips to Keep Your Hair Healthy In Between Salon Visits

Many of us haven’t been able to see our beloved hair stylists as often as we would’ve liked to in recent months due to the coronavirus pandemic. While some salons have re-opened after stay-at-home orders were lifted, there are many salons around the country that have been forced to close again or take their operations outside. I used to go to my hairstylist every two months before the pandemic, but that has since changed. To help keep my hair healthy in between salon visits, I’ve followed these three tips.

#1 Use Less Heat

This tip is a no-brainer because we all know heat equals damage when it comes to our hair. Since we’re all at home these days, it’s a great opportunity to give your hair a break from heat-styling tools like your flat iron, curling iron, and blowdryer. I’ll admit that I haven’t stopped blowdrying my hair after I wash it yet, but I’ve definitely reached for my flat iron less for touch ups.

Instead, I opt for low-maintenance hair styles like braids and low buns in between blowouts. I also use silk scrunchies like these Slip Large Scrunchies ($53) and and silk headbands like this Slip Pure Silk Headband ($97) to really prevent breakage. Plus, they look really cute!

If you’re looking for a more affordable option, I also recommend these satin scrunchies ($11) from Walmart.

#2 Nourish Your Hair Daily

One of my favorite hairstylist tips I learned years ago is to apply hair oil to the ends of your hair on the days you don’t wash it. It helps keep the ends of your hair nourished so they’re less likely to split and appear damaged. I added this tip to my nightly routine – I apply a hair oil to the ends of my hair, gently brush it through to evenly distribute it, and then I put my hair in a single french braid. When I wake up, my hair looks healthy and smooth, plus it has a little beachy wave to it from being in a braid.

My current go-to hair oil is NatureLab Perfect Smooth Hair Oil ($16). It contains a blend of argan, baobab, and marula oils as well as quinoa proteins and yuzu ceramides. It has a lightweight feel to it and smells SO good. This one from Moroccan Oil ($31) is also great because it speeds up drying time and leaves a beautiful shine!

#3 Deep Condition at Home

I love a good hair mask and often use those in place of conditioner in my hair routine. But since I haven’t been going in for hair trims as often as I did pre-pandemic, I decided to step it up with a salon-quality hair treatment. I love this In Common Crystal Cashmere Treatment ($50) because it nourishes and strengthens hair while also adding tons of shine.

In Common is a haircare company founded by Nine Zero One salon owners Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri. Since access to salons has been limited, they made this in-salon treatment available for home use. This treatment is only available for purchase through licensed hair stylists, so check out their website to find one. Also, your purchase helps support hairstylists during this time because they earn a 35 percent commission from each sale!
