6 Pro-tips for “Summer-Proofing” Your makeup

6 Pro-tips for “Summer-Proofing” Your makeup

Summer is full of wonderful things, but it can be brutal to our makeup. It’s hard to create a flawless makeup look that can stand up to 100+ degree weather. But don’t sweat it, turn to the pros. I spoke with three experts that know a thing or two about making makeup last and they shared their favorite tips and products to help your makeup beat the summer heat.

#1 PREP YOUR SKIN

The first, and arguably, the most important step in your summer makeup routine is to prep the skin. Celebrity makeup artist Robert Sesnek goes in with a skin prepping spray first followed by a moisturizer. “Using your favorite products, but with a very light hand means your summer makeup will last a lot longer”. He suggests a light, oil-free moisturizer for those with oily skin and a lighter application of your preferred moisturizer for those with normal to dry skin. Sesnek recommends Catrice Prime and Fine Fixing Spray ($8). “[This product] comes in different formulas like anti-shine and dewy glow depending on the look you want to achieve.”

#2 SWITCH TO WATERPROOF PRODUCTS

Sweat-proof and humidity-proof makeup is a must in the summer. Try waterproof versions of your favorite products, says pro makeup artist Jonet Williamson. A great waterproof concealer to try is Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer Concealer ($48). “It melts into the skin for a velvety finish that will last all day. You can literally sweat through it and it will not move,” says Williamson. For best results, apply with a damp beauty blender and set with a translucent powder and Urban Decay’s All Nighter ($22) setting spray. For those with oily skin, “add in a mattifying primer like Becca Cosmetics Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfecter ($19) to keep complexion products in place all day,” she says.

#3 LAYER ON SPF

We take sunscreen very seriously around here and NYC-based makeup artist Maya Rene agrees. “SPF is a must. There’s a lot of speculation about who needs it and who doesn’t, but all skin needs to be protected,” she says. Maya prefers to use SPF serums under makeup, “they’re lightweight, not greasy, and hydrating”. She switches between Glossier Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen SPF 35 ($34) and Solid and Striped Sunscreen-Meets-Serum SPF 30 ($28).

#4 DON’T BE AFRAID TO GO GLAM

“For a full glam look in the summer, focus on one feature. I love a very dense lash look using multiple coats of waterproof mascara. I love L’Oréal Voluminous Mascara ($9) – they have shades from carbon black to burgundy and blue. They pack a punch and are very on trend,” says Sesnek. He also suggests using a waterproof eyeliner like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil ($22) to complete the look.

#5 SKIP FOUNDATION if you can

Sweat + makeup= disaster. If you can, avoid foundation in the summertime and opt for a full coverage concealer instead, so your skin can breathe while still covering up imperfections. “I like to use denser brushes for application because they give you more control over where the product goes,” says Rene.

#6 TOUCH UP THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Even after you’ve prepped, moisturized, and doused yourself in setting spray, there’s a good chance you will need to touch up throughout the day (plus, reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours). Williamson says it’s a good idea to have blotting papers, powder, and a face mist on hand. She loves the Lilah B. Aglow Face Mist ($48) for added hydration and the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder ($34) to keep everything set in place.
