5 WOC-Owned Swimwear Brands to Shop this summer
I imagined myself beach-hopping in the South of France this summer, but obviously, my plans had to change. That hasn’t stopped me from stocking up on cute bathing suits to wear to sunbathe in my backyard though. In the past, I’d shop the latest trends from fast fashion brands, but this year, I’ve committed to being a more ethical consumer and buying from brands that align with my values. Here are five swimwear brands owned by women of color that are on my wishlist and should be on yours too.
Founded by Jamaican-born supermodel Chantal Davis, Castamira specializes in body contouring swimwear inspired by the 70’s and 90’s. The brand’s debut collection of one-pieces is timeless and sexy, featuring flattering cuts that accentuate women’s most alluring features. Davis’ love and respect for the earth is reflected by the brand’s use of eco-friendly fibers and green packaging to reduce environmental impact.
Shop my fave: The Gemser ($195)
Maygel Coronel is the brainchild of Estefania Lacayo, a Nicaraguan New Yorker with 17 years of fashion business experience, and Samantha Tams, a retail specialist. The brand was founded in Columbia in 2017 and offers unique shoulder-poofed and eclectically-designed swimwear that looks more like something you’d wear to a gala than to a poolside.
Shop my fave: The Karla Two Piece ($210)
Actress and designer Draya Howard founded Mint Swim in 2011 with the intention to make women feel sexy in their own skin. The LA-based brand offers flattering one-pieces, string bikinis, and beachy coverups that will hug you in all the right places.
Shop my fave: Summer two-piece ($47 – Sold as separates)
Jade Swim proves that minimalism doesn’t mean boring. Founded by Brittany Kozerski, the former fashion editor turned fashion entrepreneur, the brand pairs a minimal style aesthetic with luxurious Italian fabrics. Celebs including Kendall Jenner and Elsa Hosk are fans of the stylish swimwear.
Shop my fave: Lido Top ($110) and Aria Bottom ($110)
Sisters Oleema and Kalani Miller grew up on the beaches of California (now Hawaii locals) and are no strangers to the sun and surf. They founded MIKOH in 2008 with fashion and function in mind, offering sexy and wearable pieces in flattering cuts and fun prints. The brand is currently manufactured in Bali and is exploring more sustainable and eco-friendly production methods.
Shop my fave: Lopaka Top ($112)
