How I Get My Super Curly Hair Straight and Smooth
I’ve been straightening my super curly hair one way or another for the past 15 years (at least), so I’d say I’m a pro at this point. Here is what I do to get my curly hair super straight and smooth!
Before I get started, I want to say I think curly hair is beautiful! This guide is just meant to be a resource for those days when you want straight hair. You do you!
Step 1: Start in the shower
I always start this process with clean hair to have a clean slate for everything I do to my hair afterwards. Lately, my favorite shampoo and conditioner is from Dae (created by influencer Amber Fillerup Clark). It makes my hair feel unbelievably soft and the orange blossom scent is amazing – it smells like candy! The shampoo is sulfate-free which means it’s color-safe and won’t strip your hair. And the conditioner really hydrates my hair and has a nice slip to it that lets me detangle my hair in the shower.
Step 2: Air dry your hair
It’s important to let your hair air dry for two reasons. First, because if you have sopping wet hair, it’ll take forever to blow-dry. Your arms will be sore and you’ll be covered in sweat from all that work. Second, heat damages your hair, so the less time you have heat on it, the better. After I get out of the shower, I wrap my hair up in a hair towel. I’m a fan of Aquis, but truly any microfiber hair towel will do! And then after about 10 to 15 minutes, I take my hair out and let it air dry for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Step 3: Prep your hair
Did you know you can request samples of products at Sephora? I didn’t until recently and it’s totally changed my life. I recently went in, grabbed a few blow-dry creams I’d been eyeing for a while, and asked for samples. The sample size is usually only one to two “servings,” but it’s usually enough to help you get a good idea of whether the product will work for you or not. This strategy led me to a blow-dry cream from Bumble and Bumble. It’s the best one I’ve tried so far. This product is key to get my hair super smooth and it also calms frizz and gives my hair major shine thanks to the pearl powder it contains. I squeeze a dime-sized dollop into my palm, rub it through my hands, and then rake it through my hair.
Step 4: Smooth it out
Next, I use my absolute favorite hair tool of all time: the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer. If you take anything away from this story, it’s that you should get this hair dryer. It’s significantly cut down my blow-dry time and it’s just so easy to use! I recommend it to everyone. I section my hair into four large sections and then take smaller sections from there and brush this Revlon tool through each section until I’ve gone through all my hair. Pro tip: take the tiniest dollop of the Bumble and bumble cream and apply it to each large section before you dry.
Step 5: Touch it up
I have a lot of short, curly baby hairs around my face, so those pieces need a little extra attention. You have two options for this, either take a flat iron to them or you can break out the round brush and blow dryer to smooth them out. If you choose the latter, I highly recommend this round brush from Oribe. It’s made with boar bristles and grips your hair like no other round brush you’ve used before. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s one of the best round brushes I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a lot).
